Position Summary
The Research Computing Center (RCC) in the Department of Radiology at Washington University School of Medicine is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Systems Manager to support the RCCâ™s computing infrastructure. This infrastructure supports the work of research centers and labs conducting cutting edge work in advanced image reconstruction, artificial intelligence, quantitative image analysis, research data management, and clinical informatics, among other bleeding-edge research endeavors.
Working under the Director of Research Computing, you will: plan, design, manage, and support the centerâ™s physical and virtual server infrastructure, network infrastructure, and advanced storage infrastructure; ensuring high performance, high availability and data security. The center houses over 5 petabytes of research data in its storage clusters and maintains a High Performance Computing cluster as well as hundreds of virtualized production and development servers.
Job Description
Due to the location system hardware in campus data centers, local candidates are strongly preferred, however exceptionally qualified remote applicants may be also be considered for this position.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintains system performance, system security, hardware/software utilities, capacity planning and balancing operation cycles.
- Reviews changing technology and recommends purchases and enhancements to system hardware/software for maximum operational effectiveness and capability.
- Establishes continuing support services for installation and applications to maintain system operational status.
- Assures available systems programming capabilities for developing operational needs.
- Hires, trains, supervises and evaluates performance of Technical Services staff.
Manage the centerâ™s ZFS, Ceph and BeeGFS storage clusters.
Create and manage virtual storage datasets, performing migrations as necessary to maximize performance and prevent filling of storage pools.
Manage storage quotas and snapshots and associated policies.
Implement and manage system monitoring functions, responding quickly to system notifications and events; working firstly to prevent, but then quickly to recover from any system outages.
Ensure data redundancy and implement a proper disaster recovery storage plan across all critical storage datasets.
Maintain, develop, and improve systems and storage management scripts and software.
Setup, maintain, troubleshoot the centerâ™s network infrastructure, ensuring network security.
Train, mentor and supervise systems staff, developing a team of experts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with one or more distributed file systems (ZFS and/or Ceph preferred).
- A solid understanding of storage and hardware system architectures.
- Solid scripting experience.
- Experience managing VLAN networks and network security.
- Customer-focused, with an eagerness to document solutions and mentor junior staff.
- Experience managing VMware clusters and infrastructure.
- Experience with high-performance computing clusters.
- Experience and expertise in infrastructure automation tools (e.g. Puppet).
- Excellent oral and written communications.
- Experience in conflict resolution.
- Technical expertise to include Windows, Mac, desktop and server activities.
- Experience as a support specialist and/or systems administrator.
- Strong technical background and aptitude to allow understanding, coordination, execution and documentation of technology solutions.
Required Qualifications
Equivalent of a bachelorâ™s degree in business or computer science related field with 5+ years of experience in information systems management, including supervisory responsibility.

Salary Range
$75,400.00 - $132,800.00 / Annually
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
