The Mechanical Engineering Department has an outstanding opportunity for a Senior Computer Specialist. This individual will provide technical expertise, system administration and help desk support for all aspects of computing technology not otherwise managed by UW-IT or the College of Engineering. They will provide skilled, effective, and customer service friendly support while fully engaging with Mechanical Engineering (ME) students, faculty, staff and guests from a wide variety of backgrounds. This individual will report to the Administrator of the department.
RESPONSIBILITIES
End User Management: •Act as the first point of contact for help desk requests from faculty and staff. •Act as a technology consultant for research labs, providing assistance and resources as needed. •Conduct workstation, tablet, thin client routine reimaging, repairs and maintenance. •Perform mailman and group creation, deletion, delegation and user membership tasks. •Perform onboarding and offboarding technology tasks for new and departing staff and faculty. •Review and mitigate security threats received through phishing emails and other mediums. •Provide limited technical support for faculty and students with their personally owned devices.
Infrastructure Support: •Plan, purchase and manage department owned technology infrastructure, including workstations, computer labs and enterprise class servers co-located in UW-IT Data Center. •Coordinate service from various technology providers, on and off campus, for the department. •Develop intranet applications to match departmental needs. •Administer the department’s Sharepoint Intranet site. •Manage and maintain print server and Papercut web print system. •Manage and maintain department owned and leased printers and copiers throughout the building. Facilitate repairs from repair technicians when necessary. •Manage and maintain the Mechanical Engineering Building’s conference rooms and classroom AV systems. •Manage and maintain interactive touch screen lobby displays. Work with Creative Communications as needed for updates to content on display. •Administer CAAMS door card swipe access system.
Documentation/Standards: •Write and edit end-user documentation for Intranet and department website. •Manage and maintain detailed and up to date documentation of all IT systems and procedures. •Maintain disaster recovery and business continuity plans for department technology services. •Monitor and maintain compliance with all IT security standards set forth by UW and other relevant authorities. •Stay abreast of industry trends and future developments so that technology services within the department can be maintained proactively instead of reactively.
Miscellaneous Responsibilities: •Manage and maintain cheat checking service and other significant support for the ME 123 course. •Submit proposals for technology upgrades funded by Student Technology Fee. •Record and process video of faculty candidate seminars. Facilitate live stream and hybrid attendance of events on request. •Represent the Mechanical Engineering department at campus wide and College of Engineering technology meetings. •Participate in department infrastructure committee meetings. •Other technology duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS •Bachelor's degree in information technology related field and 2-3 years of relevant work experience. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration. •Mastery of the fundamentals of TCP/IP Networking (IP Addressing, Subnets, etc.) •Familiarity with Windows, MacOS and Linux operating system environments. •Demonstrated experience working with minimal supervision, both independently and in a collaborative team environment. •An ability to prioritize and complete tasks and assignments efficiently and within deadlines. •Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a strong customer service focus. A can-do attitude is a must!
Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.
DESIRED REQUIEMENTS •5+ years of relevant work experience. •Experience at UW or other higher education institution. •Knowledge and experience with IT security standards and best practices.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT •Must be okay with walking between different locations on campus. •Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.
