The Infrastructure Division within Penn State Information Technology is looking for a System Design Specialist to join the Enterprise Networks and Communication Services (ENCS) Network and Design team. The Infrastructure Division provides a world-class set of technologies and services to a world-class university, providing solutions and platforms on which the Penn State community can do remarkable things. The ideal candidate for this position will exemplify excellent customer service and team collaboration as well as thrive on helping people achieve great technological outcomes.
This position reports to the Manager of Networks and Design and will be responsible for the following:
Assisting in the development and acquisition of network automation for the UEN (University Enterprise Network) and DCN (Data Center Network)
Diagnosing and correcting network troubles and performance issues
Analyzing network traffic
Ensuring proper operation of new network services
This position interfaces with equipment and circuit vendors as well as Penn State faculty, staff, and students. The successful candidate must demonstrate an ability to identify opportunities for process improvement, make suggestions for changes, and lead implementation teams. This position provides on-call coverage and overnight travel within the state of Pennsylvania to Penn State commonwealth campuses is required. This position is a hybrid model of both in-person and remote work expected to be on-site 3 to 4 days a week.
Typical Education and Experience Requirements:
Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus 8 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Background with automation and other CI (Continuous Integration) processes
Experience with System Administration of virtual machines and containers
Experience with Python scripting, Ansible, Jenkins, git, and GitLab
Knowledge of data manipulation via structured queries and regular expressions
Experience with network monitoring applications
Detail-oriented, well organized, and a self-starter with the ability to work with diverse teams in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
Effective communication and customer relations skills
Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently
Additional Preferred Education, Experience, or Certifications:
Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
Knowledge of enterprise LANs, authentication methods, VLANs, Spanning Tree, and Layer 3 switching a plus
Extreme VDX, Ruckus ICX, and Juniper EX/QFX/MX products
Knowledge of IP fabrics, EVPN, VXLAN, firewall administration a plus
Industry-standard automation certifications
Industry-standard network certifications a plus
This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
