Job Description:
The Network Engineer IV is the senior most network engineer at Ohio University and is responsible for technical leadership including the architecture, design, implementation, maintenance, security, and performance of university-wide network and telephone services. This position requires expert knowledge of enterprise class IP based network systems and associated technologies and an awareness of current and emerging technologies and trends related to LAN, WAN, WLAN and Data Center networking and enterprise class telephone services.
This position serves as a technical lead for a team of engineering and operations staff who do not report directly to this position. This position will be responsible for evaluating emerging technologies and current operating parameters and make recommendations for potential new services and/or service enhancements. They will also be responsible for developing project requirements, implementation plans, scheduling, budget estimates, purchases and regular progress reports for large scale projects. This engineer will also be responsible for developing implementation standards and operational procedures for complex network and telephone systems to ensure optimum long-term functionality and operation.
Duties Include:
- Engineering & Architecture. Serves as a thought leader; maintain advanced knowledge of industry trends and emerging technologies; make recommendations for modifying infrastructure and/or services to meet current and future expectations; engineer robust and scalable University wide network and telephone services in alignment with industry trends and best practices. Oversee the development of standards and operational procedures; Ensure the necessary documentation and operating procedures are in place to support other team members in performing installation and configuration tasks in a consistent manner. Collaborates with peers and other technical teams to: evolve the network and telephone architecture, increase reliability, reduce defects, improve security and monitoring, and facilitate cross-team communication. Identifies tasks which require automation and automates them. Adapting traditional and non-traditional approaches to provide unique solutions to varied and complex requirements.
- Project Leadership. Develops and maintains a productive working relationship with functional owners, program sponsors, and vendor. Develops and updates detailed plans and schedules. Provides strategic guidance and insight for projects that are mission or business critical. Provides work direction and leadership to assigned programs, including scheduling, assignment of work and review of individual project efforts. Develops and maintains risk plans, processes and systems in order to mitigate such risk. Refines project/program cost estimates and confirms funding sources. Develop detailed project plans including Bills of Materials, budget estimates, scheduling, and configuration plans for design/redesign projects. Monitor projects to insure schedules, budgets and requirements are met.
- Mentoring and Research – Researches and presents new approaches, frameworks, and design methodologies to small and large teams that may include: members of the network engineering team, network distribution team, and IT leadership. Mentors students and subordinate engineers by performing design reviews, providing feedback on designs and prototypes and coaching the team on good engineering practices.
- Service Management. Provide in-depth analysis of usage trends and make recommendations for modifications to insure services have sufficient capacity and increase/decrease capacity as needed. Forecast future usage expectations and plan service enhancements to provide new services in a timely manner.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of experience and education will be considered.
- 6+ years experience designing and implementing enterprise class networks.
- Experience working with network switches, routers, firewall, WiFi systems and/or VoIP systems.
- Network architecture and design experience.
- Experience working independently and working collaboratively on a team.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Information Systems or Master's Degree
- 8+ years experience working with network switches, routers, firewall, WiFi systems and/or VoIP systems.
- 4+ years of network architecture and design experience.
- 4+ years experience with IP address design and management
- ITIL experience including service-oriented solution delivery and lifecycle management.
- Experience working on projects with a focus on agile concepts.
- Value orientated attitude with a superior ability to execute and sustain a high sense of urgency.

Advertised Salary:
