General summary/purpose:
The Network Engineer III is responsible for the overall design, configuration and troubleshooting of complex IT systems in the enterprise data centers as well as intercampus connectivity that impacts mission critical enterprise, academic, medical and research systems and application services. This position will be heavily involved in network virtualization and hybrid cloud technologies. This position will design, build and support virtual network connectivity. Examples of the hundreds of systems the engineer III will architect the network solutions for are SAP, Blackboard, ISIS, EPIC, Exchange, Anycast DNS, DHCP and cloud exchanges. These applications consist of a multi-tiered architecture of firewalls and load balancers to achieve the highest performance, availability and security models possible. This position requires an advanced understanding of the entire OSI model. This position requires advanced knowledge of BGP and MPLS to architect ISP and SP style solutions for the enterprise, which today includes 3 Tier I commodity internet providers and Internet 2. This position requires expert knowledge of network engineering in regards to routing, switching, application performance, load balancing and intermediate to expert knowledge in systems management, all server operating systems and application design.
Specific duties & responsibilities:
The network engineer III's work requires a detailed understanding of the currently deployed interfaces and data communications principles as well as advanced network troubleshooting techniques in a large scale and highly complex network environment. Requires a thorough knowledge of layer 2 switching principles. The network engineer must be able to configure, verify and troubleshoot VLANs, spanning tree, link aggregation and trunking technologies. Requires a thorough knowledge of layer 3 routing technologies, such as EIGRP, OSPF, BGP and HSRP. In addition, a knowledge of MPLS, multicast, VRF's, and QOS is required. Requires a detailed understanding of the currently deployed routing and switching principles. Requires a high level of understanding of standard cabling requirements. Demonstrated working knowledge of desktops, laptops, hardware and software setup, configuration. In depth knowledge of OSI model and how all components in an end-to-end network fit into the model. Solid understanding of DHCP and DNS as well as a thorough knowledge of private and public IP addressing. Requires project lead on campus and enterprise wide deployments of networking technologies. Requires a demonstrated understanding of service excellence techniques and skills and the ability to interpret customer needs in a fast-paced environment.
Describe the specific devices, software, projects for which the position is responsible:
This position will architect solutions for all enterprise applications such as SAP, Blackboard, ISIS, EPIC, Exchange, EPR, Anycast DNS and DHCP. This position will manage projects such as integrating or migrating new ISP and cloud solutions, deploying new network designs and other advanced network protocols in topologies that are unique to large academic and medical research institutions.
Scale/size of area, project and/or system supported:
The enterprise data centers have over 20,000 active IP addresses across a geographically disperse network. The enterprise network has grown to over 300,000 active ip addresses which the network engineer is responsible for the core connectivity allowing all campuses to connect within the enterprise intranet and internet routing domains.
Work location:
- Mt. Washington is the primary location. Travel may be required to support sites across the MD/DC/VA region and St. Petersburg FL.
On call requirements:
- Expected to troubleshoot and repair any part of the network infrastructure that is geographically distributed throughout Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC. Due to the locations, the position requires transportation and a flexible work schedule.
- On-call rotation is shared between team members.
- Assignments are required 7x24x365.
- Engineer may be called in even when not officially on-call due to major emergency or expert knowledge in a certain area or certain technology.
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree.
- Additional experience may substitute for education.
- Six + years of related experience.
- Additional education may substitute for experience.
Preferred qualifications: Same as the KSA's

- A concentration on enterprise routing, switching and optical networking.
