ITS - Network Engineering is responsible for managing consolidated IT network resources and for providing a secure and stable computing environment for the campus. Responsibilities include academic and residential network access for wired and wireless devices at main campus and remote sites, backbone administration, CENIC connection and tunnels, network security, VPN services for remote access and site-to-site links, traffic management, telecommunications management and Data Center operations at campus and remote sites.
This position applies advanced professional communications concepts, industry practices and relevant policies, procedures and goals to resolve highly complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. The person in this position chooses methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to obtain results.
Serves as subject matter expert and technical lead in defining standards, selecting equipment and achieving sustainable administration of Wi-Fi infrastructure supporting a rapidly expanding wireless service, comprising thousands of Wireless Access Points (WAPs) and expected to grow.
Serves as a technical lead and escalation resource for the Network Operations group, contributing to reliable and secure ongoing operation of the enterprise IP network in support of wireless and wired data, voice and video/TV services. Researches, recommends, implements, documents, monitors, maintains and troubleshoots network infrastructure and management systems for consistent and sustainable service delivery. Contributes technical expertise in the development and documentation of operational standards and procedures.

Serves as subject matter expert in the design, specification and operation of Wi-Fi network infrastructure in support of service targets and goals.
Serves as an escalation resource in resolution of Wi-Fi trouble reports.
Provides technical expertise for the development of documented Wi-Fi system standards, including AP placement guidelines, Wi-Fi equipment specifications, Wi-Fi access controls and metrics for Wi-Fi service validation.
Writes reports, work plans, specifications and documentation for technical and non-technical audiences.
Consults with Service Manager to determine Wi-Fi service requirements, feasibility, sustainability and communication needs.
Collaborates with network engineers to inform and review technical requirements for Wi-Fi services in the planning and design of network backbone, distribution and access infrastructure.
Collaborates with Engineering Construction Management (ECM) staff to inform and review building construction and wiring specifications to assure support for wireless service delivery.
Provides cost estimates and planning assistance for Wi-Fi and network components of capital projects to ECM. Collaborates with service management staff to ensure that Wi-Fi service definition and delivery are clear, technically feasible, sustainable and meet program needs.
Collaborates with diverse staff and contractors to develop and document effective workflow for Wi-Fi service deployment, validation and maintenance.
Performs routine management of the enterprise IP network.
Fills routine requests for IP address information, changes and additions; identifies complex addressing requests and resolves or escalates to engineering staff.
Plans, designs, evaluates, procures, implements, maintains and enhances network management tools to achieve management, security and service delivery goals for wired and wireless data, voice and video.
Compares and analyzes data from diverse sources to validate consistency of network documentation, device configurations and network management tools.
Works directly with colleagues and vendor/manufacturer technical support to isolate and resolve hardware and software issues. Tracks trouble issues and documents resolution.
Responds to and resolves escalated network problems in areas of expertise.
Communicates status of outages and problem resolution to colleagues and constituents.
Serves as network duty engineer responsible for general network problem determination and resolution during and outside normal business hours.
Troubleshoots complex issues in backbone, distribution and access networks and electronics.

Maintain Wireless Access Point location documentation and maps in network management tools, including Cisco DNA Center, Cisco Prime Infrastructure (CPI), Ubiquiti NMS and others.
Provide information on expected service coverage and quality by locality for technical staff and for broad campus visibility.

Information Technology positions are responsible for the security of UC Institutional Information and IT Resources. The incumbent is required to follow all applicable information security policies, procedures, and standards to maintain minimum standards of information security for data, systems and applications. Supervisors are responsible for making sure their staff have appropriate security skills and qualifications, and complete all appropriate and required security training.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
