The successful candidate will join the Stanford Research Computing Center (SRCC) team to assist in the management, support, and daily operation of large-scale, high-performance computing systems.
Specifically, this position will be responsible for:
Performing day-to-day tasks to ensure continuous operation, availability and performance of petascale research computing systems hosted on premises
Diagnosing and fixing software and hardware failures, following defined processes
Opening and tracking support requests with vendors
Performing hardware installation and parts replacement
Monitoring system health and performance
Creating documentation and system operational procedures
Collaborating with a wide range of researchers through support requests and direct meetings with research teams
Participating in the standardization and expansion of user-facing support materials and contributing to training sessions on use of computing resources managed by the team
Proven ability in administering multi-user Linux-based systems
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Extensive knowledge of and proficiency in installing, configuring and troubleshooting computer hardware and peripherals
Demonstrated ability to work independently with complex multisystem platforms
Knowledge of installing and managing servers in a data center environment
Knowledge of systems administration programming languages, such as Python and shell scripts
Advanced knowledge of security trends and best practices, as applied to research systems
Proven ability in administering Linux cluster systems
Knowledge of server hardware and management tools (firmware, BMC, IPMI)
Knowledge of cluster systems administrator management tools (eg. xCAT, ClusterShell)
Experience with the following technologies:
Ethernet networks (VLAN, LACP, LLDP)
PXE, DHCP and DNS
LDAP and Kerberos
SQL databases (eg. MySQL)
Parallel file systems (Lustre)
Advanced understanding of filesystem permissions and ACLs (NFSv4 and POSIX)
Knowledge of other programming languages (eg. C, Go, etc)
Experience with user support in academic or research environments
Proven documentation skills
A bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study and 8 years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
Frequently stand/walk, twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above shoulders, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.
Occasionally kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), grasp forcefully, use a telephone,
