Ensure a continuously available computing infrastructure by monitoring server environment and data and television networks. Be accountable for the physical manipulation of computer equipment and network cabling with the data centers. Coordinate with Vanderbilt IT teams and contractors for the fulfillment of customers' requests.
The Computer Operations Center is a part of the Vanderbilt Data Center Services department. The unit is a 24/7/365 operational environment onsite at the main campus.
Duties and Responsibilities
Participate in problem and incident resolution by providing proper notification, escalation, and documentation:
Continually monitor displays, emails, and phones for reports of abnormal activity and escalate issues to the appropriate workgroup for resolution.
Properly document alarms, contacts, and escalations where necessary by creating or updating existing incident records according to operating procedures.
Manage major incidents by escalating and notifying all required parties, facilitating organized communication between said parties, and documenting all aspects within an incident record.
Act as a steward of the data center environment:
Perform installations and removals of rack mounted equipment within the data centers.
Run various forms of network cables within the data centers.
Properly document all installations, moves, and removals in the inventory management system.
Follow established change management protocols.
Regularly perform inventory audits of the data centers.
Accurately account for use of all consumables.
Interpret customers' requests and coordinate with them to gather any additional information required to fulfill their needs in a timely manner.
Maintain the security of the data center environment and act as an escort when needed.
Assist in the management of projects by planning and coordinating with other computer operators, facilities analysts, management, other IT workgroups, and contractors.
Perform regular walk-through inspections of the data centers for visual and environmental indicators outside normal parameters:
Inspect rack mounted computer equipment for visible or audible indications of error.
Examine environmental control systems for errors, warnings, and alarm conditions.
Check uninterruptible power systems to ensure operation is within normal parameters.
Understand the operation of fire suppression systems.
Perform routine administrative tasks:
Operate computers and peripheral equipment as they apply to systems, data, voice, and television networks.
Provide optical scanning services to automatically evaluate examinations while maintaining strict confidentially of student data.
Ensure that all resources checked out from the Computer Operations Center are logged according to documented procedures.
Create or update written procedures used by data center staff.
Search and analyze logs to create periodic reports.
This position does not have any supervisory responsibility. This position reports administratively and functionally to the Manager of the Network Operations Center.
Required education: Associate degree in a related field.
Necessary experience: None
Preferred education: Bachelor's degree in a related field.

Required hard skills/certifications:
Fundamental knowledge of computer networks.
Moderate skills with the Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred hard skills/certifications:
CompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCENT certification.
Experience running network cables.
