Information and Technology Services (ITS) is looking for aResearch Cloud Administrator Seniorto join the Advanced Research Computing - Technology Services group within ITS.
This position will report to the Research Computing Manager and will be responsible for designing, building, operating, and supporting a research private cloud. The private cloud will host administrative systems, databases, and other services for research. This position will act as a technical resource as part of a team that will create and operate our private cloud infrastructure. This position will also learn and act as a technical resource for any public cloud projects that the team undergoes. The successful candidate will have the ability to act on specific project initiatives and provide expertise, guidance, and strong collaboration to various team members. This role will be dynamic, to meet the changing requirements for building and supporting new and innovative systems to meet faculty needs.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Actively support and collaborate with team members and other technical staff throughout the university to resolve issues and achieve implementation plans and timelines by keeping teams and technical staff informed and making system configuration changes. Provides operating system support to include system patches, kernel module programming and configuration, provisioning and deprovisioning.
Design, develop, and automate deployments of Verge-OS tenants for researchers, create and maintain system documentation.
Acts as a representative of ARC-TS in relevant campus groups, forums, communities, and discussions. Provide updates and advice to the team on relevant initiatives, staying abreast of the latest application technology trends in scientific hardware and environments. Keep abreast of new methods, functionality, and releases in order to utilize changes in the private cloud software.
Manages data center use and hardware availability. Maintains node inventory and other systems capacity planning (data centers, networking, etc.)
Design, develop, and automate deployments of tenants in Public Cloud resources.
Develop and maintain professional relationships both with other ARC-TS members and affiliates to advance and support computational research around the University
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Minimum of four (4) years experience in a related role requiring confidentiality, timeliness, customer service, organization, prioritization, troubleshooting analysis, problem solving, and ability to work independently
Strong understanding of Linux, bash/shell, and one or both of the following programming languages: Perl or Python.
Familiarity with OpenStack, CloudStack, VMWare, Verge-OS or other private cloud offering.
Familiarity with deploying systems in one of the three major public cloud offerings (AWS, Google, or Microsoft.
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Demonstrated effective creative problem solving and flexibility when collaborating with customers, team members support teams, external vendors, and technical organizations to understand, advocate for, evaluate, and support enhancements, resulting in plans and services that leverage the capabilities of existing technology and meet customer and organizational expectations.

Advanced degree in an engineering or science related field.
Experience with Software Defined Networking (SDN)
Actively involved in a public/private cloud community
Understanding of Docker containers and their use
Familiarity with the Ceph filesystem or other Software Defined Storage
Familiarity with Azure or AWS API’s
Experience providing IT support in an academic environment
Experience with X-Cat, Kickstart, Puppet, Ansible, or other configuration management systems
Experience with common SQL and NoSQL databases (Oracle, MySQL, Vertica, MongoDB, MSSQL)
This position will be filled at the Senior level salary range of $82,503 - $95,000 as the primary goal. The requirements listed below reflect the Senior level expectation. Applicants with lesser experience are encouraged to apply and may be considered if the primary goal is not met. Lesser-experienced candidates will be reviewed at an Intermediate salary range of $69,000 - $77,250.
**Note: This is a full-time (40 hrs/wk), term-limited appointment with funding ending on June 30, 2022.**
