Infinera is searching for an Optical Engineer to join the Optical Module Group in Sunnyvale, CA for the development of new Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC)-based, high speed, and advanced modulation digital coherent optical engines.
The candidate should have solid foundation spanning optoelectronic devices and their contributions in performance impairment of the coherent optical MODEM, fundamental blocks in the coherent digital signal processing chain, coherent optical test and measurement methods, and software automation. Experience with optical link design including power budgets, OSNR measurement and calculations, fiber penalties (CD, PMD, nonlinearities), and critical components specifications like laser FM-noise and ADC/DAC ENOB is essential.
The broad job responsibilities include the hands-on testing and characterization of PIC-modules and digital coherent optics (DCO) subsystems.
Frequently used diagnosis capturing coherent waveforms on a high-speed oscilloscope and performing coherent signal processing on waveforms and measuring bit-error rate performance in the presence of optical noise and other impairments.
Through frequent interaction with the firmware and controls teams, you will assist in optimizing performance-critical aspects such as powerup self-calibration, receive acquisition, acquisition robustness, performance tuning and tradeoffs between the DSP engine and the PIC-module, real-time performance monitoring, and in-service performance optimization. These algorithms will be tested during the implementation stage to ensure they operate properly.
Results will be presented internally and documented as electrical and optical performance specifications for next-generation platforms.
The successful candidate will work closely with optical system group (OSG), DSP, Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC), ASIC, module design, and product engineering teams to ensure quality release of new products starting from architecture and design phase all the way through to the manufacturing release.
Strong theoretical and experimental background with coherent optical modems, digital signal processing techniques and DSP chain.
Fundamental understanding of coherent optical modules and components, including optical transceivers, tunable laser, MZ modulators, modulator drivers, photodetectors, transimpedance amplifiers, and EDFAs
Demonstrated proficiency in characterization and automated testing as required in design and development.
Programming experience in Matlab, C, C++, VB.net, or similar for automation of instrument control and data acquisition.
Strong problem solving, failure mode analysis, teamwork, as well as excellent oral and written communication skills are essential to succeed in this position.
Ability to work with a large body of data and the necessary statistical analysis tools, and the ability to present the data and ideas to a diverse audience.
Job will require frequent interaction with OSG, DSP, PIC design, PIC test, ASIC design, packaging and system engineering groups, as well as with quality/reliability and product engineering personnel.
Ability to work in an integrated team environment.
