Principal Optical Engineer – Subsea
Location: Annapolis Junction, Maryland
The Principal Optical Engineer – Subsea would be key part of a focused engineering group within Infinera specializing in Subsea solutions. The job involves developing optical transmission systems in the lab and in the field to advance state-of-the-art transmission concepts and products for undersea cables. Position works with Infinera’s DSP group to develop and test novel nonlinear algorithms to enable Infinera’s products to work on the world’s most challenging subsea links. Travel to subsea customer sites around the world to showcase the next gen products, modulation formats, and algorithms. Position also works closely with deployment and design engineers in building subsea software tools along with cloud database and advanced modeling capabilities.
Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities
Develop methods and equipment to evaluate advanced optical transmission methods
Evaluate novel coherent algorithms, working closely with the DSP group to ensure the best performance on legacy and new subsea cables
Conduct customer trials: assemble and demo next gen lab equipment at subsea customer sites to showcase next gen modulation formats
Develop tools for deploying and optimizing Infinera equipment on subsea links
Develop subsea specific scripts for optical monitoring, protection, and restoration
Education / Experience
MS required, PhD desired (Physics, Optics, Electrical Engineering)
5-8 years exp. Optical Engineering in Subsea Systems
SW development skills. Experience in developing SW for lab automation SW, trials or product implementation
Experience with novel coherent algorithms desirable
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Knowledge of transoceanic subsea systems, including wet-plants, SLTE, optical branching units, and combined subsea + terrestrial systems is preferred.
knowledge of nonlinear fiber optics and coherent DSP algorithms is desired
Knowledge of festoon links is desired.
Ability to work independently with high impact within a highly skilled and cross functional team.
Able to find creative solutions to technically challenging problems and implement until finished, working and possible to deliver to customer.
Passion for process automation and building scalable processes
Experience in customer interaction and understanding of customer networks is a plus.
Willingness to travel.
