Job Summary In this position, you will be serving as a senior network operations engineer and a customer-facing network design and architecture resource. You'll be working directly with customers who need high-speed IP network connectivity to intranet sites, research facilities, cloud vendors, and the wider internet to develop solutions that are the optimal balance of performance, resiliency, risk, and cost for their situation. You will plan and implement customer migrations and new deployments on a national-scope IP/MPLS network, while following change procedures to mitigate customer impact and downtime. You will also help handle network emergencies, troubleshoot connectivity issues, and advise management on future network planning. In particular, this position will have senior engineer responsibility for optical network designs and deployments. All our positions work closely with our systems automation team and monitoring infrastructure team to structure network data and incorporate automation tools into the day to day management of the network. This position is posted at a PA4IT level but may be filled at a PA3IT level depending on the candidate's qualifications. Although they will be similar, the duties and responsibilities may differ if filled at the lower rank. Please see the Required Qualifications section below for the qualifications listed for each level. Required Qualifications PA4IT Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field and five years of experience in the administration and engineering of complex network environments and various architectures, including work in Layers 1 through 3. Combinations of education and related experience may be considered. Experience with large scale, high level architecture design for complex systems. Proficient in English. Ability to effectively communicate and exchange information with multiple teams including Engineering, Service Desk, Systems/Software, and Project Management, as well as our customers' organizations at several levels. Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism. Demonstrated time management and priority setting skills. Demonstrated commitment to quality. Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Ability to demonstrate a high level of accuracy, even under pressure, and a high degree of initiative. Ability to influence internal and/or external constituents. Breadth and depth of knowledge in all network layers, security, network hardware, data center architectures, and customer experience in order to deliver the optimal solution for our customers. PA3IT Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications, Information technology, or a related field and two years of work experience in the areas of design, integration, installation, configuration and maintenance of data networks, including experience with several link-layer protocols (Ethernet, SONET, others). Combinations of education and related experience may be considered. Broad knowledge of networking protocols, specifically relating to routing of packets (OSPF, IS-IS, BGP, PIM, MSDP, MPLS). Working knowledge of other Internet services and applications within the IP suite (TELNET, FTP, NNTP, DNS, SMTP, HTTP). Strong interpersonal skills and a customer service orientation. Technical writing skills. Ability to effectively communicate and exchange information. Understanding of network standards and protocols. Ability to effectively handle multiple priorities and constantly changing demands. Breadth and depth of knowledge in all network layers, security, network hardware, data center architectures, and customer experience in order to deliver the optimal solution for our customers. Preferred Qualifications PA4IT: Supervisory experience. Master's degree. Experience with recent large-scale network protocol, device, and policy configuration and troubleshooting on Juniper and Cisco platforms, optical network experience with Ciena or similar equipment, scripting in Perl or Python, and using a trouble ticketing system. Skill in designing test plans, creating proposals, doing technical presentations, and assembling RFP documents. Ability to balance multitasking and focus on priority projects appropriately. Background check, US citizenship, and clearance may be required. PA3IT: Experience with Cisco and/or Juniper routers and switches, optical technologies especially WDM and DWDM, programming in Perl or C, basic UNIX system administration, and with the installation and maintenance of networking or other computer hardware. Experience with large scale projects and rollouts.
