SDSC's Datacenter Manager will direct datacenter initiatives that enable UCSD's and SDSC's international, national, state, and local missions. SDSC operates UCSD's largest datacenter, with over 19,000 sq. ft. of raised-floor space supporting a vast array of computing equipment from research groups at SDSC and across UCSD, as well as an entire facility dedicated to the UC Health systems. The Datacenter Services Manager oversees this datacenter and its 24/7 support and technical staff, as well as participate in the planning, long-range goals and coordination of SDSC's UCSD and UC-wide colocation activities.
SDSC's Datacenter Manager will be directly responsible for the coordination of SDSC's support for UCSD and UC-wide colocation activities, including the new UC Health HIPAA-compliant facility. This includes oversight of the technical and operational documentation for the facility and its physical and data security needs; direct coordination with customers and other campuses to develop and maintain Service Level Agreements, Memorandums of Understanding, and other agreements; and financial management of the activity. Incumbent will direct the planning and performance of critical datacenter projects, including coordination with customers, internal technology groups, and USCD Facilities Management to insure the long term success and readiness of the data center.
Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in computer science, data processing, computer information systems, or in a related field, or equivalent work experience.
Experience and deep technical knowledge of energy metering, forecasting, monitoring and managing demand and peak load. Knowledge of and experience layering disparate sources of power, such as battery storage. Ability to improve and certify data center metrics, particularly PUE.
Expert technical understanding and experience evaluating and overseeing the procurement, installation and servicing of large data center assets including but not limited to generators, UPS systems, air handlers, power distribution and seismic/life safety infrastructure.
Experience managing a data center facility with HPC systems is preferred.
Demonstrated skill in managing technical staff.
Thorough knowledge of subject area sufficient for strategic planning, technology assessment and direction. Expert planning and management capabilities. Ability to think strategically and creatively, to anticipate technology trends and to transfer that thinking into cogent plans for a large and complex organization.
Experienced in leading change management activities and managing their impact across the unit or department. Strong demonstrated ability to independently plan and carry out complex projects to completion by selecting approaches, deploying resources, coordinating phases, and interpreting and evaluating results with top management.
In-depth knowledge of various areas of IT. Broad knowledge of the IT environment. Solid knowledge of information systems function. Knowledge of technical concepts and basic operating principles of data communications, computer hardware, vendor IT products, and software.
Expert knowledge of subject area sufficient for strategic planning, technology assessment and direction.
