Berkeley Lab's Physics Division has an opening for an LZ Computing Infrastructure Developer to work on software development and maintenance for the LZ experiment.
In this role, you will develop and maintain methods and procedures to transfer scientific data from the experimental site in South Dakota to the primary data center at Berkeley Lab, NERSC, and to UK data centers.
LZ is a next-generation dark matter experiment, selected by the US Department of Energy (DOE) and the US National Science Foundation as one of the three 'G2' (for Generation 2) dark matter experiments.
What You Will Do:
Provide technical expertise in support of operations of the data transfers between SURF, NERSC, and UK data centers.
Provide technical expertise in support of establishing and maintaining databases associated with data transfers and data processing at NERSC.
Provide technical expertise in processing and management of data production at NERSC.
Collaborate with LZ scientists on data transfers and data processing at NERSC.
Coordinate the maintenance of LZ code when underlying OS and external packages are updated.
Profile and improve the efficiency of LZ data transfers and associated databases.
Document infrastructure software code for both users and developers.
Write unit tests and integration tests; support continuous integration testing at NERSC.
Develop presentations for collaboration meetings, seminars, workshops, and conferences.
What is Required:
Bachelor's Degree in Physics, Astronomy, or closely related field and a minimum of 5 years of related experience with the development and maintenance of webservers or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience with modern software development practices.
Proficiency in the following:
C++, Python 3, and object-oriented languages.
Running Linux nodes (Ubuntu and CentOS).
Managing and maintaining SQL databases (e.g. Postgres or MySQL)
Java Enterprise Edition for web application development.
Use of git for code management and Continuous Integration.
Docker Images and orchestration software, creation, and distribution of images.
Experience with Astronomy, Physics, Cosmology datasets, or related scientific datasets.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work effectively within a large geographically distributed collaboration with varying computational expertise.
What We Prefer:
Ph.D. in Physics, Astronomy, or closely related field.
Experience with the following:
Wildfly server for web applications.
Maven for web applications.
Kubernetes or Rancher 1 and 2for Docker Images.
MongoDB for database management.
Nginx for the development of Webservers.
SAML2 for user authentication.

This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 3 year, Term appointment with the possibility of extension for a total of 5 years or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
