About the Opportunity: The Network Architect is responsible for architecture, design, testing and implementation of the University's LAN, WAN, Internet, Intranet, and Cloud network infrastructure. This includes development and testing of router, switch, and wireless hardware and network management server configurations; supporting/troubleshooting of network/system problems; coordinating with vendors for installation of network hardware and systems, and implementation plans and timelines.
The Network Architect will work with both IT, the business and 3rd party vendors regarding design, implementation and support of systems, networks and applications associated with a world class university production-computing environment.
The Network Architect position will possess superior analytical, problem-solving and communication skills, be a detail-oriented leader with extensive knowledge of various types of network, security and wireless systems, and work in a team-oriented environment. Strong time management and critical thinking skills are also required.
This position will report to the Assistant Director of Network Engineering and will bring a strong in-depth knowledge of all aspects of Network information systems in a large university setting. The Architect position will work together with stakeholders, leadership and subject matter experts to effectively design, test, implement and support effective technical solutions that maps to the organization's strategy, processes, information, and information technology assets. These solutions will be architected not only to serve the current needs of the organization but also with strong consideration for providing service well into the future.

Responsibilities: Architect, design and implementation of Northeastern's network infrastructure, including router, switch, wireless, firewall, VPN, load balancing, and network management server configurations
Design, implementation and test of data network systems
Troubleshooting and resolution of network issues
Implementation and Integration of new network technology and services
Design, support and troubleshooting of network and systems, problem remediation, vendor coordination for installation of network and systems hardware and project implementation plans and timelines
Implement and execute a network topology that supports the university vision, compliance, traceability, and strategy.
Perform vendor management and use partner relationship skills to identify and leverage resources internal and external to enhance capabilities that support business objectives
Ensure optimal design, operation, interoperability and performance of network related hardware and software
Development of short and long term strategic roadmaps for technology and services
Documentation of network architecture and infrastructure including equipment, fiber and copper plans and conduit and support systems, operational requirements and designs
Communication with internal university partners and clients of network and next gen technologies
Communication of network architecture, design and implementation to the network engineering and operations teams
Explore industry trends and changes in network software and hardware technologies in order to improve current service levels
Design and deploy scalable, highly available, and fault tolerant network systems in the cloud and on premise
In collaboration with Office of Information Security, Design cloud and infrastructure solutions to meet Northeastern University security standards.
Work as a technical leader along-side internal customer business, development and infrastructure teams.
Help internal customers architect scalable, highly available application solutions that leverage network service
Analyze solution requirements and assist with the technical design and implementation to address complex business and technology needs
Implement DevOps practices such as infrastructure as code, continuous integration and automated deployment (CI/CD)
Facilitate training and development of network engineering and operations teams across all platforms to ensure solid understanding of the overall infrastructure
Development of backup strategy, business continuity and disaster recovery plans for the network
Map business requirements to technical solutions
Mentor junior members in usage and administration of existing and new network and infrastructure technologies
Management of external partners and suppliers
Qualifications: BS level technical degree required; Computer Science or Networking background preferred or equivalent experience; MS degree desired.
The ideal candidate has a minimum 15 - 20 years' experience working with Network Routing, Switching, Wireless, and Network Security.
Exceptional documentation skills that can clearly articulate technical designs, issues and constraints, procedures, and assessments
Excellent presentation and communication skills regarding technical and non-technical concepts
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to establish professional working relationships with varying levels of both business and technical personnel
Ability to drive the development of standards and implementation of automation
Deep hands-on experience leading the design, development and deployment of technology infrastructure, network, compute, storage, and virtualization experience.
Technical writing skills for documenting environments and procedures.
