Department Summary Information Services (IS) is the central information technology unit at the University of Oregon and provides wide-ranging services to campus. Information Services consists of four major functional areas: Customer Experience, which serves as the key contact point for interactions with campus clients and customers; Applications & Middleware, which manages and supports applications, integration services, identity management and data management; Information Security, which helps protect virtual or physical information; and Technology Infrastructure, which provides administration and support for the software, hardware, and services needed to support the campus IT environment. Information Services also includes the Advanced Network Technology Center. IS works closely with the Network for Education and Research in Oregon.

Position Summary Reporting to the Director of Enterprise Systems, the Associate Director of Data Center Infrastructure provides leadership and management for the Converged Infrastructure group within the Infrastructure and Engineering unit of Technology Infrastructure. The Associate Director will lead operational and strategic planning for the group including fostering innovation, planning projects, and organizing and negotiating the allocation of resources for the team. This position will also recommend future technology directions, including servers, operating systems, hardware, and software.
The Converged Infrastructure group operates the campus data center network and services. This position is an integral member and is key to the delivery of robust services from UO Data Centers in the Computing Center, Allen Hall, and Oregon Hall. Services this unit provides include but are not limited to firewall services, network services, load balancing services, VM and storage solutions to the campus community.
This position possesses authority to formulate and carry out management decisions or represent management’s interests to taking discretionary actions. This position also possesses budget authority over their team and functional area. This position will act for the Director of Enterprise Systems as directed and, under these conditions, experiences broad department decision-making.
Essential Personnel This position may provide essential services during times of emergencies and inclement weather. This position may be required to fulfill essential services and functions during these times.
Minimum Requirements • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience. • Three years of professional work experience managing data center services. • Three years of experience supervising employees. • Proven project management skills in a fast-paced technology-driven environment. • Experience coordinating technical teams, complex projects, and budgets.
Professional Competencies • Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds. • Demonstrated problem-solving skills. • Ability to adapt within a rapidly changing technical environment. • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to audiences with a wide range of technical skills. • Ability to work independently as well as in a team-oriented, collaborative environment. • Proven skills in technical writing and verbal communications.
Preferred Qualifications • Advanced degree. • Experience working in Information Technology within higher education. • Extensive knowledge of and experience in network switching and routing, storage solutions, VM’s, load balancing, firewall services. • Demonstrated knowledge of automation techniques for converged infrastructure for network, VM and storage services. • Experience managing and negotiating vendor contracts and agreements with end users, service providers, and regulatory agencies.
