THIS IS NOT AN H1- B OPPORTUNITY ResponsibilitiesUnder the supervision of UC Davis and the general direction of the Section Chief of the CalREDIE Surveillance Section within the Communicable Disease Emergency Response Program of CDPH, the Senior Database Administrator is responsible for managing large-scale database technologies and architecture. The California Reportable Disease Information Exchange (CalREDIE) is an electronic disease surveillance and reporting system maintained by CDPH and used by CDPH, local health departments (LHDs), health care providers, and laboratories. The system is comprised of a Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) software integrated with Microsoft SQL Reporting Services, a custom Data Warehouse and Data Distribution Portal, and Orion Rhapsody in the CDPH data center. Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree, preferably in Information Systems or Computer Science or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Extensive management experience of advanced-level database administration functions supporting multiple (10 - 20) databases in large enterprise organization(s)
Advanced experience with Microsoft OS as it relates to database administration
Extensive experience with managing large, mission critical databases, and enterprise database administrative functions, including database definition, storage allocation, security administration, database reorganization, performance tuning, backup and recovery
Extensive experience in managing or working with business and technical staff in a large enterprise organization(s)
Demonstrated experience detecting, troubleshooting and successfully resolving database Server related CPU, memory, I/O, disk space and other resource contention using database diagnostic techniques
Excellent project management skills with a track record of managing complex projects on-time and within budget
Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written, communication skills to clearly and effectively interact with a diverse group of individuals
Advanced skills to analyze complex information/problems in an objective manner to derive logical conclusions in order to establish priorities, select appropriate courses of action for pursuit or recommendations to others, and to resolve conflicts
Strong leadership skills, as it relates to data and database design
Expert-level knowledge and extensive experience supporting and managing large object oriented relational database technologies including use of all major features of the Microsoft SQL Server database management engine: SQL Server Integration Services, SQL Server Analysis Services and SQL Server Reporting Services
Demonstrated knowledge and experience architecting and implementing high performance and robust relational database solutions in the Windows environment
Demonstrated knowledge and experience with requirements definition, data and process modeling, normalization, model integration, and structural analysis
The ability to secure and/or provide information to clarify situations, resolve problems and clearly document procedures regarding database systems
Preferred knowledge of, or familiarity with, CalREDIE or a similar electronic disease surveillance system
Located in the Sacramento office of CDPH.
Occasional overtime. In the case of a declared public health emergency (activation of the Joint Emergency Operations Center), the incumbent may work extended hours and on weekends / holidays in support of the CDPH emergency operations.
Some travel to regional sites and meetings throughout California.
