This position is in the Department of Washington University IT, Division of Shared Infrastructure (Network Engineering). This position resides at 4480 Clayton Ave. location.
This position leads the network technical strategy which drives the cyberinfrastructure activities supporting the Washington University Research Domain, and particularly the Washington University Research Network (WURN). The WURN is positioned to enhance the university’s cyberinfrastructure increasing access to and enabling the transport, analysis, and dissemination of large volume, big data within and beyond the university.
As a Network Engineer III, this position also performs highly technical and analytical work serving as a specialist for networking, enterprise network planning, high-level troubleshooting, security, network system administration, and networking products and services. Work includes the enterprise design, review of infrastructure requirements, technology evaluation, testing, and developing guidelines for implementation. Consults with clients and/or vendors to determine future network systems requirements, their costs, design additions, solutions to complex network operating problems, and the design of network security systems. Serves as expert on all network services and as a resource to senior analysts in network problem solving and design. This includes determining needs and researching new technology additions and improvements to the network.
Additional roles may include technical specialist in network management systems or telecommunications networks (data, video, and voice-over IP), network architecture, network systems administration, network services, and converged network services.� While having a general understanding of the entire network, this position requires a complete hands-on understanding of multiple aspects of network technologies (routing and switching, data center, wireless, security, etc.)
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leads teams of network engineers to work with customers to develop requirements for network services and then to design cost-effective, secure, and reliable solutions to meet those requirements
Research new technologies in the fields of routing, switching, wireless, security technology, and vendor solutions and makes recommendations
Serve as team lead within the work unit and ensures that work of others follows departmental workflow and processes
Tier 3 resource for various network performance and connectivity issues
Prepares and maintains detailed network documentation both for networking team and end users, ensuring that all documentation meets department standards
Configures and manages central network components (including network distribution and core, firewalls and VPN gateways, wireless controllers) to provide service to end users and departments
Configures and manages security perimeter devices (firewalls and VPN gateways) to provide service to end users and departments
Perform other duties as assigned
Bachelor’s degree in electronics, telecommunications, engineering, or a closely related field plus a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in network design, analysis, or equivalent education and experience.

Technical Solution Development: Significant knowledge to be considered the university expert in an advanced voice, video, or data network specialty and serves as a resource for other specialists
Technical Support: Advanced knowledge of technology resources and specialty areas to serve as resource for analysts
Consultancy Skills: Ability to provide expertise and consulting to committees, boards, and/or CIO; ability to consult with clients, high-level technicians, analysts, and technical peers to resolve problems
The hiring range for this position is commensurate with experince.
