The System Engineer position performs a major role in supporting the Linux technical needs of the Development and Alumni Relations Division. This requires a dynamic process and solutions oriented individual. These attributes are basic and fundamental to all aspects of the technical nature of this position
Organizational Unit and Authority
This position reports to the Senior Systems Engineer in the Technology Management unit and provides direct technical support to Advancement Services technology infrastructure and applications. The candidate must exhibit an ability to work closely with support personnel and developers within Advancement Services The candidate will work independently, functioning with project teams within Advancement Services as warranted
The preferred candidate will be a full-time technical resource with a shared responsibility for all Linux operating systems, infrastructure software, open systems platform, and all Linux servers for the Advancement Services Data Center. Responsibilities will include implementing, maintaining, and troubleshooting the infrastructure supporting the Advancement Services database system (ALADIN) as well as all ancillary management applications. This role is a member of the technology management team and provides support to the Advancement Services team, collaborating on systems status, including system changes, problems, enhancements and potential impacts. Additional responsibilities include maintaining system design, network, and application level troubleshooting. Candidates must possess strong problem solving, analytical and communications skills, strong technical competence, an ability to learn fast, and strive to utilize available resources to resolve complex problems. Complex and large projects typically are applications/systems with 500+ concurrent users requiring uptime commensurate with Projects often require interaction with various departments and teams both within and outside the department. Work is complex.
Knowledge, Skills and Responsibilities
Possess significant Linux System Administrator experience in an enterprise environment
Possess the ability to install Operating Systems and associated software
Ensure service availability, reliability, & monitoring.
Qualifications LAMP Stack, bash shell, Linux internals, SElinux , specific knowledge in SSL, RUN level 3 CMD line interface, ACL’s, HTTP configuration ( apache ),SSL, sudo ,SFTP.
Perform operating system implementations to customer specification
Work with project manager and other implementation teams to coordinate and troubleshoot any implementation issues.
Ensure complete and accurate documentation of data center environment.
Implement a schedule of system backups and archive operations by using best practices for the environment to ensure data/media recoverability.
Develop complex scripts and solutions by using departmental standards to automate systems management.
Design and/or integrate security authorization and access control. Audit and maintain user access and authorization by following access and authorization documentation to provide for system security.
Implement changes while adhering to the change management policies and procedures in order to deliver a successful solution to the customer. Communicate to all parties the nature, significance, and risk factors.
Site and/or server provisioning and administration.
Regular system, application, and database maintenance or patching.
Reviewing and addressing security concerns and vulnerabilities.
Assist with the management of SSL certificates of all sites.
Assist with migrating legacy web applications over to modern, containerized hosting solutions.
Candidate must have the following:
Bachelor’s degree or the ability to demonstrate skills may be considered if candidate does not possess a BS in a related field.
Three years of related experience required. 4+ years of experience with Systems Administration with a minimum of 3 years’ experience managing Linux Systems in mission critical, production environment preferred.
Experience working for ecommerce companies with high transaction environments
Demonstrate the ability to manage and implement large scale infrastructure projects
Experience in use of virtualization/VMWARE in the support of systems infrastructure
Expert knowledge of Linux Environments (RHEL, Centos, Oracle Linux etc.)
Knowledge of Open Source technologies
Experience with Unix Shell and/or Perl scripting and PHP
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to think creatively under pressure
Ability to work in a team environment
Specific Skill Set

Understanding of ITIL principles
Experience with web application servers such as apache, tomcat and is desirable
Experience with Oracle is desirable
