The Computer Operations Specialist ensures a continuously availablecomputing infrastructure by monitoring server environment and data andtelevision networks. This position is accountable for the physical manipulationof computer equipment and network cabling with the data centers. The role coordinateswith Vanderbilt IT teams and contractors for the fulfillment of customers'requests.
The Computer Operations Center is a part of the Vanderbilt Data CenterServices department. The unit is a 24/7/365 operational environment onsite atthe main campus.
Key Functions andExpected Performance
Problem and incident resolution:
Continuallymonitors displays, emails, and phones for reports of abnormal activity andescalate issues to the appropriate workgroup for resolution
Properlydocuments alarms, contacts, and escalations where necessary by creating orupdating existing incident records according to operating procedures
Managesmajor incidents by escalating and notifying all required parties, facilitatingorganized communication between said parties, and documenting all aspectswithin an incident record
Act as a steward of the data center environment:
Performsinstallations and removals of rack mounted equipment within the data centers
Runsvarious forms of network cables within the data centers
Properlydocuments all installations, moves, and removals in the inventory managementsystem
Followsestablished change management protocols
Regularlyperforms inventory audits of the data centers
Accuratelyaccounts for use of all consumables
Interpretscustomers' requests and coordinates with them to gather any additionalinformation required to fulfill their needs in a timely manner
Maintainsthe security of the data center environment and acts as an escort when needed
Assists in the management of projectsby planning and coordinating with other computer operators, facilitiesanalysts, management, other IT workgroups, and contractors
Perform regular walk-through inspections of thedata centers for visual and environmental indicators outside normal parameters:
Inspectsrack mounted computer equipment for visible or audible indications of error
Examinesenvironmental control systems for errors, warnings, and alarm conditions
Checksuninterruptible power systems to ensure operation is within normal parameters
Understandsthe operation of fire suppression systems
Perform routine administrative tasks:
Operatescomputers and peripheral equipment as they apply to systems, data, voice, andtelevision networks
Providesoptical scanning services to automatically evaluate examinations whilemaintaining strict confidentially of student data
Ensuresthat all resources checked out from the Computer Operations Center are loggedaccording to documented procedures
Createsor updates written procedures used by data center staff
Searchesand analyzes logs to create periodic reports
This position does not have supervisoryresponsibility; this position reports administratively and functionally to theManager of Computer Operations.
Associatedegree in a related field is necessary
Bachelor'sdegree in a related field is preferred
CompTIANetwork+ or Cisco CCENT certification is preferred
1year of experience is preferred
Fundamentalknowledge of computer networks is necessary
Moderateskills with the Microsoft Office Suite is necessary
Experiencerunning network cables is preferred
