The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) has an immediate opening for a Systems Administrator . ECE is an academic community of 1,400 plus individuals (faculty, staff and students) and includes global research and teaching efforts through extensions of our Pittsburgh academic programs and research in Silicon Valley, Portugal, Rwanda, Thailand and Singapore. The Systems Administrator will be a key member of the Information Technology Services (IT Services) group.
The IT Services group primarily supports the computing needs of ECE customers in Pittsburgh and associated campuses worldwide. Customer groups across the College of Engineering are also supported. A wide variety of technologies and customer use cases are covered with a focus on administrative, research, and educational computing. IT Services operates a 1000 sqft, professionally managed data center that delivers mission critical services to 2000+ customers, hundreds of client systems, and many racks of servers which are almost completely virtualized. IT Services also partners with other service groups across campus to deliver a complete range of solutions for distance collaboration, HPC research, LOB automation, and innovative education environments.
Responsibilities of the Systems Administrator include support and management of client systems in IT Services for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and its worldwide programs. Technologies include client workstations and front-end servers; Linux; secondary focus on Windows, and MacOS; client and datacenter virtualization; scripting and automation with prevailing languanges and IDEs; network and communications protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, wired and wireless Ethernet); network file systems; distance communications. Use cases include administrative, research, and educational computing; distance learning. Support roles include helpdesk customer support; business process analyst; office automation programmer.
Minimum experience required: Two years of current Linux data center and desktop administration in a heterogeneous environment. Excellent customer service; Excellent writing ability; system deployment, management, and troubleshooting in Linux client and server OS; formal programming training; web server management using Apache or NGINX; knowledge of virtual system deployments [VMWare, RHEV]; demonstrated experience with automation tools, APIs, and techniques for backend systems and business productivity; scripting in contemporary, common languages and related IDE's [C, Python, Ruby, shell]; understanding of version control systems; ability to troubleshoot undocumented issues with low-level tools such as syslog, tcpdump, dmesg, etc; understanding of configuration files, system variables, and editing tools; fundamental understanding of switching and routing; experience with modern project management methodologies. Ability to visit various facility locations; Ability to visit customers; Ability to travel domestically for training courses or conferences; Ability to troubleshoot in tight physical locations; Ability to infrequently work in areas without air conditioning; Ability to work in data centers with high-volume air flow at 60 degrees (F) and higher. Ability to pay strict attention to research protocol; ability to remain calm and composed when dealing with difficult situations or people; ability to work under pressure and meet inflexible deadlines; some evening and weekend hours may be required.
Preferred education and experience: Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Science, or equivalent combination of training and experience. Current Linux Certification such as LPIC, Linux+, RHCA, LFCS. Three or more years of related experience in a heterogeneous, highly-available education environment; experience with non-profit, academic, or research cultures. Excellent understanding of computer operating systems (RHEL, Windows), declarative configuration management software, virtualization and data center networking; experience with software package management; experience with business process modeling; experience with database management (MySQL, PostGres); experience with web server technologies; experience with distributed version control systems; experience with highly-available network file systems (NFS/AFS/DFS); excellent ability to troubleshoot complicated computer or network problems; advanced understanding of other desktop or server operating systems such as macOS/OSX; excellent understanding of Active Directory, LDAP, and SSSD.
Preferred other: Excellent customer service skills; ability to have agnostic view of solutions; ability to reach across technology stacks and groups with a focus on problem solving; ability to provide accurate, holistic estimates that account for short-term and long-term resource inputs related to time, labor, equipment costs, and software costs; ability to provide accurate, holistic estimates that account for productivity gains and losses across the environment; ability to empathize with customers and find solutions that address the problem and the person; ability to mentor other staff members with patience and tolerance of alternate viewpoints; ability to match the Department goals with multiple solution alternatives.
