Detailed Job Description The Director of Research Computing Services is an accomplished technology leader with expertise in Research Computing technologies, responsible for delivery of world class services in support of a diverse collection of sponsored, scholarly, and academic research endeavors for the Rochester Institute of Technology. The Director manages service delivery with a strong emphasis on a concierge approach to onboarding researchers, and guiding them to fit-for-purpose solutions for their research needs. Adopt and advocate a service-oriented plan for implementation and delivery of research computing services with a focus on the customer.
Responsibilities: Work with the research community to understand requirements and key enablers to growing research, especially sponsored research at RIT, and to communicate to the research community the capabilities and services of ITS Research Computing. Research Computing Director will:
Work closely with the Research Computing Advisory Board (RCAB)
Establish with the assistance of the research community KPIs for Research Computing
Establish regular face to face opportunities for the research community to gather research community feedback, and report on requirements and service delivery quality
Develop and execute a long term approach to sustainability through the effective implementation of a Research Computing cost model, including recovery models
Strategic planning, including technology roadmaps, for Research Computing services and infrastructure, in collaboration with enterprise systems and operations including, but not limited to, individual strategies for:
Service catalog/offering definitions
Virtualized environments for research
Data management for research
Compliant environment support
3rd party relationships to complement in-house capabilities Responsible for understanding and following information security best practices, regulatory and compliance, university policies, and information security standards impacting this role including use of any tools, technologies, services, and processes required to protect the university's information assets. Human resource planning and management including job descriptions, mentoring, succession planning, salary planning, oversight of performance reviews Work closely with the ITS Senior Leadership to leverage IT services and existing processes for the research computing environment, ensuring consistency across environments. Required Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree 8 years progressive experience in IT management focused on infrastructure services at the enterprise level 5 years of leadership experience leading the delivery of research computing services 5 years experience managing IT infrastructure services and resources
Demonstrated leadership ability
Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
Ability to think and lead strategically
Focus on identifying and developing emerging leaders
Operational information security experience and/or certification such as CISSP, CISM, etc.
Ability to establish consensus on complex issues across a wide variety of stakeholders
Adept at managing multiple, sometimes conflicting priorities, with focus on supporting mission critical buisness services
Willingness to boldly examine traditional infrastructure models and adopt emerging models such as DevOps and Agile development methodologies, to deliver innovative and efficient solutions
Skilled at managing change; technical, cultural, organizational, etc.
Preferred: Advanced degrees in any area PI experience on research team Experience managing service-oriented infrastructure and operations
